چکیده

In this paper, we propose an analytical and methodological comparison between two of the most known distance-based methods in the evaluation of the geographic concentration of economic activity. These two methods are Ripley’s K function, a cumulative function popularised by Marcon and Puech (2003) that counts the average number of neighbours of each point within a circle of a given radius, and K density function, a probability density function of point-pair distances introduced by Duranton and Overman (2005), which considers the distribution of bilateral distances between pairs of points. To carry out this comparison, we first apply both methodologies to an exhaustive database containing Spanish manufacturing establishments and we evaluate the spatial location patterns obtained from both analysis. After an initial analysis, we realise that although these functions have always been treated as substitutes they should be considered as complementary, as both cumulative function and probability density function provide relevant and necessary information about the distribution of activity in space. Therefore, our next step will be to assess what are the advantages and disadvantages of each methodology from a descriptive and analytical way. † Department of Economics, Universitat Jaume I, Avda. The efficiency of sampling indices in estimating the spatial pattern of wooden species in central zagros forests (Kalkhani forest in Kouhdasht, Lorestan province, Iran)

It is so important to apply suitable methods to have a reliable estimation of the spatial distribution of trees. This research was aimed to determine and evaluate the spatial pattern of five species by distance- and density-based indices (Quercus brantii, Acer moncepesulanum, Crataegus aronia, Pistacia atlantica & Amygdalus lycioides) in the Kalkhani Forest in Koudasht Lorestan province, Iran. ...

A Modification of Ripley’s K Function to Measure Aggregation About a Mass

We present a methodology that detects spatial patterns of 3-dimensional point processes that include a mass within the study region. Spatial patterns such as clustering, randomness, or repulsion are considered in respect to the mass surface. Our method closely resembles Ripley’s K Function but is modified to discern the pattern about the mass surface. We walk though the definition and derivatio...

FOCAL POINT AND FOCAL K-PLANE

This paper deals with the basic notions of k-tautimmersions . These notions come from two special cases; that is, tight and taut immersions. Tight and taut based on high and distance functions respectively and their basic notions are normal bundle, endpoint map, focal point, critical normal. We generalize hight and distance functions to cylindrical function and define basic notions of k-taut ...

Customer classification using k-means algorithm for optimizing the transportation plans is one of the most interesting subjects in the Customer Relationship Management context. In this paper, the real-world data and information for a spare-parts distribution company (ISACO) during the past 36 months has been investigated and these figures have been evaluated using k-means tool developed for spa...

Empirical Comparisons of Planar and Network K-functions in Traffic Accident Analysis

Ripley’s K-function is one of the most effective and most common methods to analyze patterns of clustering and regularity in spatial distributions of point events. However, ordinary K-function analysis assumes a continuous planar space with the Euclidean distance, which could be a serious pitfall when one wants to examine phenomena that are constrained by a transportation network, including tra...
